The YONEX BG 80 has become the most popular badminton string among professionals. But there have also been some innovations in recent years such as the super-thin Aerosonic mm or the aerobite hybrid stringing for badminton took a closer look at how these developments compare to the top strings that have been tried and tested over the years. About the methodology In order to be able to concentrate fully on the differences between the strings - just like in the first string test - all strings were again pulled with identical hardness 11 kg on identical rackets the new YONEX top racket NANOFLARE 800. As always at BADLAB, the test criteria for our 5 testers were not just any laboratory measurements, but the personal impression of every single string on the racquet. Since we do not make our tests for professional players, but for ambitious recreational players, our testers are a well mixed team of highly ambitious recreational players up to the national league level. The character of each string was evaluated according to 8 criteria on a scale from 1 not applicable to 5 fully applicable. So the maximum score is a 5th, but this time we have refrained from making an "overall score" per string to focus your attention more on the differences between the strings. After all, in the end it's all about finding the string that suits each individual player. Let's start with the hard facts YONEX AEROSONIC - 0,61mm rating 1 2 3 4 5 Average 1. The string conveys a good feel for the stroke touch/feedback - - - 1 4 4,8 2. The string has good elasticity and damping properties - - - 3 2 4,4 3. The string retains its elasticity trampoline effect for a very long time - - - 2 3 4,6 4. The string supports a good length on Clears - - - 2 3 4,6 5. The string supports my underhand play in defense - - - - 5 5 6. The string provides good control during short game cut or short crossball at net - - - - 5 5 7. The string offers a rich, controlled power transmission in hard smashes. - - - 4 1 4,2 8. The string impresses with a good "soundâ - - - 1 4 4,8 Rating The YONEX AEROSONIC / mm is the only string to achieve the unanimous top score of in individual categories - with "good control in short game" and "supports my underhand play". The AEROSONIC also received a top score of for "good feel", and the thinnest string in the test mm also managed to achieve the best score of all strings in the "Sound" category. But this very thin string also has its limits, namely when it comes to power transmission and a rich feel when smashing. For professionals it therefore "only" appears as a cross string in the Aerobite and Aerobite Boost hybrid sets. For all other players who prefer feeling and perfect control in short game, the YONEX AREOSONIC with its incomparable sound is our top recommendation. YONEX AEROBITE - 0,67 / 0,61 mm rating 1 2 3 4 5 Average 1. The string conveys a good feel for the stroke touch/feedback - - 1 3 1 4 2. The string has good elasticity and damping properties - 1 - 2 2 4 3. The string retains its elasticity trampoline effect for a very long time - - 1 2 2 4,2 4. The string supports a good length on Clears - - - 3 2 4,4 5. The string supports my underhand play in defense - - - 4 1 4,2 6. The string provides good control during short game cut or short crossball at net - - - 3 2 4,4 7. The string offers a rich, controlled power transmission in hard smashes. - - - 3 2 4,4 8. The string impresses with a good "soundâ - - 2 2 1 3,8 Rating The YONEX AEROBITE / mm has been the pioneer in hybrid stringing sets since 2016. What has been common practice in tennis for years has now been successfully brought to the badminton market by YONEX two different strings are pulled lengthwise and crosswise onto the racket. In badminton, the main aim is to get the badminton into a spin more effectively during the short, cut shots at net. The coloured longitudinal string of the AEROBITE is a mm thick coated PU string with a very high coefficient of friction. The very thin mm cross string is the ultra-thin AEROSONIC string described above in the test. In our testers, this string combination also impressed with very good values for the length of Clears and the controlled power transmission of hard Smashes. All other evaluations speak for themselves and prove that the first hybrid stringing in badminton is an absolute hit. This is also known among the top players in the world. Currently, YONEX AEROBITE is played, for example, by Kento Momota, Carolina Marin, Lin Dan, Mark Lamsfuss and Viktor Axelsen. YONEX AEROBITE BOOST - 0,72 / 0,61 mm rating 1 2 3 4 5 Average 1. The string conveys a good feel for the stroke touch/feedback - - 2 3 - 3,6 2. The string has good elasticity and damping properties - 1 1 2 1 3,6 3. The string retains its elasticity trampoline effect for a very long time - - 3 - 2 3,8 4. The string supports a good length on Clears - - - 2 3 4,6 5. The string supports my underhand play in defense - - 1 3 1 4 6. The string provides good control during short game cut or short crossball at net - - 2 1 2 4 7. The string offers a rich, controlled power transmission in hard smashes. - - 2 - 3 4,2 8. The string impresses with a good "soundâ - 1 2 2 - 3,2 Rating The YONEX AEROBITE BOOST = / mm is the second hybrid string of this series. As the longitudinal string here, an extra thick fiber wound from Vectran twice as thick as nylon was used, which with its diameter of mm not only ensures significantly longer durability but also reduces the loss of energy on impact. The cross string is the ultra-thin Aerosonic here too. Practical tests have shown that the YONEX Aerobite Boost with its top value of is right at the top in the category "support of a good length at Clears". Compared to the normal aerobite, however, our testers could not find any other advantages. Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, the No. 1 in the world-ranking list in menâs doubles, currently plays this string combination, for example. . YONEX BG 80 - 0,68 mm rating 1 2 3 4 5 Average 1. The string conveys a good feel for the stroke touch/feedback - - - 1 4 4,8 2. The string has good elasticity and damping properties - - 2 3 - 3,6 3. The string retains its elasticity trampoline effect for a very long time - - - 3 2 4,4 4. The string supports a good length on Clears - - - 3 2 4,4 5. The string supports my underhand play in defense - - - 3 2 4,4 6. The string provides good control during short game cut or short crossball at net - - - 1 4 4,8 7. The string offers a rich, controlled power transmission in hard smashes. - - - 2 3 4,6 8. The string impresses with a good "soundâ - - - 4 1 4,2 Rating As expected, the YONEX BG 80 / mm was convincing in every respect! Almost all ratings have a peak value. It is therefore no wonder that the YONEX BG 80 is one of the strings most played by professionals. The fact that the string delivers a good hitting feel is beyond question with our test results. But the real strength lies in the rich, controlled power transmission in hard smashes. On this point, the BG 80 achieved the maximum value of over all strings in the test together with the BG 65 Ti.The Yonex BG 80 is a little rougher than the Yonex BG 65 and therefore balls can be cut better. However, it is also rubbed through faster. We recommend this hard top string preferably for tournament allround players. The Yonex BG 80 is currently played by world class players such as Kevin S. Sukamuljo, Chou Tien Chen, Lee Yong Dae, Anders Skarup Rasmussen YONEX NANOGY 95 - 0,69 mm rating 1 2 3 4 5 Average 1. The string conveys a good feel for the stroke touch/feedback - - 2 3 - 4 2. The string has good elasticity and damping properties - - 2 3 - 4 3. The string retains its elasticity trampoline effect for a very long time - - 3 1 1 3,6 4. The string supports a good length on Clears - - 2 2 1 3,8 5. The string supports my underhand play in defense - - 3 1 1 3,6 6. The string provides good control during short game cut or short crossball at net - - 1 4 - 3,8 7. The string offers a rich, controlled power transmission in hard smashes. - - 1 4 - 3,8 8. The string impresses with a good "soundâ - 1 4 - - 2,8 Rating The YONEX NANOGY 95 / 0,69 mm is far above average in all our test criteria, but the special strength of this string is in our testers' opinion its elasticity and damping properties as well as an excellent feel for the hitting. The CS Carbon Nanotube material combines optimum speed, maximum rebound power and excellent recommend this medium hard string to players who focus on speed and durability. No wonder that one of the fastest men's doubles players, Keigo Sonoda from Japan with world ranking no. 4, plays the YONEX NANOGY 95. YONEX BG 65 - 70 mm rating 1 2 3 4 5 Average 1. The string conveys a good feel for the stroke touch/feedback - 2 2 1 - 2,8 2. The string has good elasticity and damping properties - - 2 3 - 3,6 3. The string retains its elasticity trampoline effect for a very long time - 1 3 1 - 3 4. The string supports a good length on Clears - - 3 2 - 3,4 5. The string supports my underhand play in defense - 1 4 - - 2,8 6. The string provides good control during short game cut or short crossball at net - - 5 - - 3 7. The string offers a rich, controlled power transmission in hard smashes. - - 4 1 - 3,2 8. The string impresses with a good "soundâ - - 1 4 - 2,8 Rating The YONEX BG 65 / mm is one of the most popular standard strings worldwide and a solid all-rounder. This is also reflected in the midfield assessment of our testers. The elasticity and damping properties are particularly noticeable here. But the biggest advantage of the BG 65 is clearly its durability. From our point of view, this durable string is therefore a top choice for all those who play with nylon balls. But also NG Ka Long Angus, currently ranked No. 9 in the men's singles world rankings, prefers the YONEX BG 65. YONEX BG 65 Ti - 0,70 mm rating 1 2 3 4 5 Average 1. The string conveys a good feel for the stroke touch/feedback - - 1 3 1 4 2. The string has good elasticity and damping properties - - 3 2 - 3,4 3. The string retains its elasticity trampoline effect for a very long time - - 1 4 - 3,4 4. The string supports a good length on Clears - - - 4 1 4,2 5. The string supports my underhand play in defense - - - 5 - 4 6. The string provides good control during short game cut or short crossball at net - - - 5 - 4 7. The string offers a rich, controlled power transmission in hard smashes. - - - 2 3 4,6 8. The string impresses with a good "soundâ - - - 3 2 4,4 Rating The YONEX BG 65 Ti / mm cannot be compared with the normal BG 65 due to the shock-absorbing Titanium coating. Our testers felt that immediately. Although the BG 65 Ti also has one of the strongest diameters in the test with mm, it feels much thinner when playing and impresses with a particularly good sound. The biggest highlight of this string, however, was found by our testers in the controlled power transmission during hard smashes. Just as with the BG 80, the BG 65 Ti achieved the best value of overall strings in this category. But top scores were also determined in all other categories. These advantages of the YONEX BG 65 Ti are also used by world-class players such as Marcus F. Gideon and Ratchanok Intanon. Conclusion Just like in our first string test, the BADLAB Racket Team was impressed by the extent to which the different string diameters and materials shape the character of a badminton racket! It's definitely worth experimenting with different strings and stringing tensions instead of just looking for durability - especially if you want to take the qualities of high-end badminton racquets to the limit, and if you play with real feathers! This often makes even more sense than thinking about a new frame. About the YONEX strings in the test The choice of the "right" string is extremely individual. What is my personal playing style? My punching technique? With which racquet must the string harmonize? We, therefore, recommend that you really look at the tables above in detail. Nevertheless, three strings stood out especially for our testers The YONEX AEROSONIC is our recommendation for sensitive players. For us it is the upgrade of the thinnest YONEX string Ultimax 66 so far because although the AEROSONIC is even thinner and more sensitive than this one, it is also more durable. For the demanding all-rounder, our recommendation is shared by the YONEX BG 80 and the hybrid stringing YONEX AEROBITE. Both combine a very good feel with a maximum of control and are therefore played by a large number of professionals. Which of these two strings suits you better personally, we recommend to try them out! A tip in passing Every string tires in the course of time. String your rackets at least once every 3 - 4 months instead of waiting until the string breaks. An elastic string will definitely add to the fun of badminton and improve your game, because it will provide more power and better feedback! If you want to check the condition of your stringing yourself, we recommend the free stringster app, with which we at the BADLAB racket squad of course also work. NEWS As the new YONEX SKYARC - mm was not yet available for this test, we tested it separately for you. 20. February 2020
ďťżUsing the right badminton strings is absolutely essential in maximising your performance to win games. Besides performance, choosing the correct strings is important as re-stringing your racket can be very costly. Iâll suggest some badminton strings which I find good and cost effective. Different types of strings serve different purposes during a badminton game. Therefore, choose the string that suits your playing style. You might also want to get advice on string tension as it also affects your performance. Important Basics About Racket Strings Common badminton stringsâ diameters range from to Strings with diameters outside the range of to are not very popular. THIN STRINGS Have more repulsion more powerful Have larger sweet spot on the racket string bed Are less durable Produce less accurate shots THICK STRINGS Have less repulsion less powerful Have smaller sweet spot on the racket string bed Are more durable Produce more accurate shots âRepulsionâ and âSweet Spotâ Explained Repulsion is the degree in which the shuttlecock can bounce off the racket string bed. High repulsion provides more power into your badminton shots. The shuttle bounces of quickly. Low repulsion simply means less power in your shots. The shuttle stays on the string bed longer before it bounces off. Sweet Spot is a specific area on the racket string bed. When the shuttlecock makes contact with this sweet spot, you get maximum power for your shots. Large sweet spot Easier for shuttlecock to make contact with sweet spot. see pic below Small sweet spot More difficult for shuttlecock to make contact with sweet spot. see pic below Interesting Fact on Badminton Strings and Sweet Spot The sweet spot on the string bed gets smaller and smaller once you increase the thickness of your string. When the sweet spot gets smaller, itâs not a bad thing! Despite having a smaller sweet spot, if the shuttle makes contact with that smaller sweet spot, the shot will be very powerful! However, it requires good skill and technique to make contact with the smaller sweet spot. or should be the thickest strings if your objective is to generate maximum power. Strings thicker than are for players seeking durability. It is almost impossible to generate power with strings thicker than Badminton Strings Review Ok letâs begin with the various popular strings. Yonex has a wide range of strings for you to choose from. In terms of quality, I personally think that Yonex owns the technology to produce the finest quality strings in badminton. Yonex BG 66 Strings Diameter Suitable for Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced badminton players Advantage Power high repulsion, Good Feel Downside NOT durable The Yonex BG66 is the MOST POPULAR string FOR POWER among players and fans. Yonex BG 66 ULTIMAX Strings Diameter Suitable for Intermediate and Advanced badminton players Advantage Power hig h repulsion, Good Feel, Good for Slicing Downside Very expensive The Yonex BG-66 Ultimax is an improved version of the BG 66. The BG 66 strings provide good power high repulsion but lacks durability. The BG 66 Ultimax is MORE DURABLE than the BG 66. Both BG 66 and its Ultimax version have equally high repulsion. To me, the BG 66 Ultimax is definitely a better string compared to the BG 66. But why is it not as popular? One word⌠price! Besides the increased durability, I find the BG 66 Ultimax to be the best strings for SLICING. Slicing is a common advanced technique. It is commonly used to perform shots like the cross court drop shots slice and reverse slice, deceptive cross court net shots, and so on. Slicing with the Ultimax gives me a nice feel for the power. Sometimes when you over-slice, the shuttle canât travel far enough. With the BG 66 Ultimax, you can FEEL the power as you slice. In other words, you can concentrate more on technique! You donât have to worry whether the shuttle will pass the net. The BG 66 Ultimax is very expensive. In fact, its one of the most expensive Yonex badminton strings. If youâre seeking for maximum performance, consider this investment worth it. World class players who use this string are Taufik Hidayat INA and Chris Adcock ENG Yonex BG 80 Strings Diameter Suitable for Advanced badminton players Advantage Power high repulsion if you hit the sweet spot, Accuracy, Durable Downside Difficult to use The Yonex BG-80 is a thicker string compared to both the BG 66 strings. It has a more concentrated sweet spot. The BG 80 is for consistent performers and who are familiar with their rackets. This is because it is a relatively thick string, that equates to a smaller sweet spot! The concentrated sweet spot injects a lot more power into your shots when the shuttle makes contact with it. I personally favour the Yonex BG 80 for POWER. Since itâs a thicker string, it is also more durable. You can produce more accurate shots compared to using the thinner strings. However, these strings wonât be good for slicing. If you are an intermediate or advanced doubles player, the BG 80 is perfect in helping you launch powerful shots from the back of the court. Peter Gade uses the BG 80 at 34lbs of tension! BG 65 Strings Diameter Suitable for Intermediate and Advanced Players Advantage Accurate Shots, Durable Downside No Power low repulsion It is very difficult to generate power with the Yonex BG-65 string. This is because of its thickness and its extremely small sweet spot. However, you will be able to produce more accurate shots. It is also extremely durable, which means that you can save a lot of money on your stringing. If you are a woman and play mixed doubles, this might be a good string for you because most of the time, women engage in technical and control shots. This string is perfect for precision play. English mixed doubles player Imogen Bankier uses the BG 65. Beginners should stay away from this string because it really is difficult to produce power with these strings. If you try to perform a full power smash with this string, youâll waste your effort. Advice for Beginners to Choose the Most Suitable Badminton Strings I suggest using the Yonex BG-66 because it has high repulsion. Beginners can concentrate on performing correct techniques rather than focusing on power. The high repulsion of the Yonex BG 66 badminton strings will ensure there is enough power. But take note, the BG 66 is not that durable. So make sure you perform gentle strokes; which is the fundamental of good technique; even if itâs a smash! When your skills improve and as you start injecting more power into your shots, consider switching to the Yonex BG-66 Ultimax for increased durability.
